I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For ... Avocados?!?
I have to admit, I was highly skeptical about ordering avocados through a web-based grocery platform. I just assumed that by the time they were packaged and shipped out, they’d be overripe and brown. But Azure Standard had an awesome sale on organic avocados, and having moved from California—the heralded home of the avocado—to VA, I have been desperate to find really stellar-tasting avocados that aren’t stringy and watery. Yuck.
So, at less than $3.50 for three of these delicious gifts from God, I figured I had nothing to lose. I’m glad I took the chance! My little nuggets of green goodness arrived hard as a rock and took a good five to six days before I could cut into them. Even then, they were a little on the firm side, which is how I prefer them if I’m slicing them for my salads (as pictured here), and softer if I’m mashing them up for a killer guac. (RIP avocado.)
Most people don’t know this (I didn’t until my trainer told me about six years ago!), but avocados are filled with fiber — up to 6 grams for half of one — along with the healthy fat for which they are so well known. In fact, avocados are actually fruits. I’m sure most Azure customers, being very savvy food nuts, know this, but many still consider them … well I don’t know what people consider them. A vegetable? I never bothered to think about it. They were always in a class all their own. In fact, I think they deserve their own food group. I’ll have to bring that up with the MAHA Commission.
Anyway, this photo shows my latest obsession, particularly as I embark on my very low-carb, high-fat diet! I'm eating an arugula, avocado, and artichoke salad with cottage cheese and some smoked salmon. I drizzle it with Azure olive oil and a nice dash or two (or three) of salt and pepper.
I can’t think of anything that I wouldn’t put avocado on. Maybe a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? But frankly, even that’s up for debate. Anyway, if you’re on the fence like I was, don’t hesitate — hop over it and reap the benefits!
