My first pet was a beloved goldfish called (in a burst of pet-naming genius) Golda. Our dad set up a little tank on our kitchen sink complete with filter, blue gravel, and a fake plant for her, and my sister and I took turns feeding her in the mornings. We loved seeing her gracefully flick through the water, taking joy in caring for a living creature so different from us. Every once in a while, she would get sick and move sluggishly around the tank.
