Frozen Peas, Please!

My first pet was a beloved goldfish called (in a burst of pet-naming genius) Golda. Our dad set up a little tank on our kitchen sink complete with filter, blue gravel, and a fake plant for her, and my sister and I took turns feeding her in the mornings. We loved seeing her gracefully flick through the water, taking joy in caring for a living creature so different from us. Every once in a while, she would get sick and move sluggishly around the tank. When this happened, our dad would feed her a green pea — and she would recover!

It wasn’t until my sister mentioned this years later that I wondered why. What was so special about green peas? According to the Complete Goldfish Care website, some varieties of goldfish have tightly packed organs, which means they can easily become constipated when fed a protein-heavy diet. Since peas are high in fiber, this helps the fish clear out its gut.

Peas are super good for humans as well! They help fight against many health issues — according to the National Library of Medicine, “the pea and its products exhibit various health benefits, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-renal fibrosis, and regulation of metabolic syndrome effects.” According to Azure Life, pea protein includes arginine, ghrelin, and lysine, which build muscle, lessen hunger, and help collagen formation, respectively. Peas are also a great source of fiber — one cup contains seven grams of fiber. Peas are little green veggies that pack a punch!

And Azure Market Organics Frozen Garden Peas (FG164) are no exception! I am now the proud owner and taste tester of a five-pound block of frozen peas, and to warm myself up on an unseasonably wet and even chilly summer day, I made a small bowlful of them. After boiling them on the stovetop, and topping them with salt and pepper and a butter pat, I was excited to try Azure’s little green balls.

One thing that has consistently amazed me about Azure is how their food manages to stay fresh when it has come all the way from Oregon to Tennessee in a freezer. When I took off the lid of the boiling peas, a fresh mellow aroma swept across the stovetop. And the smell matches the taste! Unassuming and earthy, the low-key flavor of these peas makes them great on their own or in a soup or pie. Despite coming hundreds of miles and being thawed from frigid temperatures, they kept their shape and texture nicely. I will definitely be adding these peas to my Azure order.

Isn’t it amazing how God created plants to help humans and their finned companions alike? Though peas are a common dinner food, they provide important nutrients and benefits for so many key functions. If food has helped heal you or your pets or both, tell us your story by commenting below!
