We have always created whatever shape and style birthday cake each of our children would like for their party. As my girls got older, about 8 or so, they started to want to decorate their own cakes. I love to encourage creativity in the children, so I allow them to go for it.
Using our favorite fluffy chocolate cake with a basic frosting (but you can easily use my essential cream cheese frosting), my daughters chose two unique ways to celebrate their birthdays: a cupcake bouquet cake and a round stacked cake.
The best part is that we had just received the new colorings from ColorKitchen right before my daughter Yohanna’s 9th birthday. We were all excited to try out all these exciting colors. You can definitely play around with them to get different shades and colors.

Birthday Cupcake Bouquet
My girls Yohanna, 9, and Ingrid, 11, decorated these cupcakes all by themselves. A double batch of the chocolate cake recipe will yield about 15-17 cupcakes, but you might have some extra dough.
My daughters are not experts, but they had a wonderful time and enjoyed all the colors. They used a piping tool to create the flower designs, and added a green frosting “vine” to depict the stems of the flowers.
We wanted to share the idea with you and show all the pretty colors you can easily make without using any toxic artificial colorings.
Ingrid’s Birthday Cake
For Ingrid’s 11th birthday, she chose a simple round stacked cake using 9-inch rounds and one 6-inch petal pan. She doubled the cake recipe and used the extra dough to make cupcakes. Then she added some ColorKitchen colorings to the frosting to make the lavender and green.
She had a lot of fun decorating the cake. I wanted to share what a child can create with completely natural ingredients all on their own. We hope you are inspired to create some lovely sugar-free, artificial-coloring free cakes.
Perhaps in the future, I will share with you some of the more professional-looking weddings cakes that I have done over the years to give you a better idea of what can be made out of 100% organic and natural ingredients. Until then, happy baking and decorating!
